Christ the Redeemer is an Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was created by French sculptor Paul Landowski and built by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, in collaboration with French engineer Albert Caquot. Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida fashioned the face.

The Story Behind the Statue

The idea for a large religious monument in Rio first emerged in the 1850s, but it wasn’t until the 1920s that the project gained serious momentum. Built as a response to what was seen as a growing trend of secularism in Brazil, the monument was intended to reaffirm the country’s Christian roots.

Completed in 1931, the statue was designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and sculpted by French artist Paul Landowski. Its Art Deco design makes it one of the most recognizable monuments in the world.

Built from reinforced concrete and soapstone, Christ the Redeemer has withstood harsh weather, lightning strikes, and time itself—becoming not just a religious symbol, but also a cultural landmark.
